In his preface to this third edition the author records that his findings on Polynesian voyaging, and their association with New Zealand, first appeared in two volumes of the"Journal of the Polynesian Society"and were later issued in book form. The second edition"was largely re-written, and the whole rearranged in such a manner as to form a sketch of the history of the Polynesian race --- particularly the Maori-Rarotongan branch --- down to the separation of the New Zealand Maoris from the original stock, when they migrated from Eastern Polynesia to New Zealand."He noted that some further information was included in the third edition. Percy Smith's theories on the migration patterns that led to the establishment of the Maori race were an early attempt to exolore the various possibilities relating to its origins. One of his theories advances India as the likely source of the Polynesian race. This, and other of the author's views, have been challanged but his theorising of more than 100 years ago still provides much food for thought and some provocative interpretations. These are presented in seven chapters, one of 11 section dealing with the history of the race. The first publication in book form appeared in 1898, the second edition in 1904.
