Books

When the author was given permission to visit the Japanese mandated zone of the Caroline Islands in the early 1930s he was able to gain impressions that were all too soon to be confirmed --- that Japan had ambitions to increase its territorial possessions in the Pacific and beyond. The mandated islands that he visited were former German colonies, placed under the care of Japan following World War One. The Micronesia/Caroline Isl;ands were made up of more tha 2500 islands or reefs, with 1400 being islands of reasonable size. As well as reporting on Japanese administration, policies and possible intentions,Willard Price's account also studies the history, native peoples, culture and traditions as observed on his interesting South Seas adventure. First edition of 1936, 323 pages including index, 49 b/w photos, e/paper maps. Brown hard covers with gilt front decoration and spine titles VG, internally excellent with sprinkle of foxing few early pages. (The book would be rated VG+ except that one plate, pages 164-165, is detached but loosely enclosed.)
