Books

In 2001, during a garage clean-up, the long-forgotten collection of Whanganui photographer William Henry Thomas Partington (1855-1940) was discovered. For some years he operated as a photographer in Auckland, moving to Whanganui in 1891, returning to Auckland in 1908. The collection comprised 500 prints and 235 glass negatives, including studio portraits, outdoor studies of individuals or groups, settlements along the Whanganui River and views of the river. Plans were made to auction the collection, with arrangements also made to publish a selection of Maori images as"Te Awa."According to the book's introduction the pending sale"attracted attention, excitement and consternation."As most of the images were of Whanganui River Maori"iwi were united in their desire to see the photographs brought home."On the night of the auction"protest action led to it being called off."Subsequently the collection was purchased by the Whanganui Regional Museum and rhe Whanganui River Maori Trust Board. Thus the collection did"come home", being particularly important historically to the region as the images"document a time of transition and provide material to promote research into many aspects of Maori life."Te Awa"contains more than 100 images selected from the collection, including a number of double page spreads, many portraits, domestic and life-style scenes from Maori settlements and general scenic views. Each b/w image is of outstanding quality of sharpness and detail. To turn the pages is to step back in time! First edition of 2003 from Godwit/Random House, 143 pages including caption details (where available) with erratum slip pasted in below, pictorial card covers are NF, red e/papers and text block also NF, no inscriptions.
