Irene Adcock: A Goodly Heritage, Tauranga in Tauranga, Bay of Plenty for sale

Books

Published to mark the centennial of the settlement of the Eketahuna in 1873 this history tells a story that differs from the norm in NZ. The Eketahuna new arrivals were of Scandinavian stock, at a time when the vast majority were from the British Isles. Thus these pioneers were confronted not only by a strange and bush covered land, but had to adapt to a new language, customs and adopt a foreign allegiance. However, these were hardy and resiliant folk and this excellent history tells of their hardships, struggles, isolation, perserverence and success in establishing a strong and successful community which never lost its Scandinavian links. All aspects of the development of the district, its industries, commerce, local government, civic and community activities are covered by the author. 354 pages including seven appendices, bibliograohy, index, 81 b/w photos, e/paper maps. Brown hard covers with gilt spine titles NF, ditto text block, no inscriptions. Wrap-round colour art DJ showing Eketahuna in 1893 VG+.(Loosely enclosed are two programmes from the Eketahuna and Districts Senior Citizens Centennial Luncheon held on March 8, 1973. (The autograph sections on the back page carry 16 attendee signatures on one and 13 on the other.)
