Books

The author had 40 years of trout fishing experience to pass on when this book was first published in 1957. When this reprint left the presses in 1968 it was the fourth printing. There is much the experienced fisher can learn from this book, and a vast amount by the beginner. His 17 chapters cover all aspects of the sport, --- the first 10 dealing with the practical aspects such as equipment, casting, fish biology and habits, river and lake fishing , landing the catch and the ethics of the sport. Remaining chapers are devoted to flies and their uses and include materials, tools and hooks, constructing flies and a dictionary of productive fly patterns. 252 pages including index , section one contains 43 illustrations mainly diagrams and charts, section two has 13 similar illustrations. preceeding the"dictionary"are four colour plates, two showing dry flies and midges, one wet flies and the fourth divided between streamers and nymphs -- over 100 detailed examples in all. All illustration by the author, including a frontis cartoon which may be autobiographical. His final wisdom on fly tying is:"It is much, much better to tie one good fly in an hour's time, than a dozen that would be taken only by a trout with a sense of humour."Yellow hard covers with red spine title VG+, text block is excellent, no inscriptions. Plastic protected DJ is VG with colour fly specimens to front, photo at back, top corner front flap price clipped, protective tape on upper/lower edges beginning to lift in two places.
