This fine local history covering"the Whangaehu River Valley from Reid's Hill to Mt View"had its conception at a Heritage Ball held in the Okirae Woolshed in 1984, when the three co-authors were appointed. Proceeds from the ball were to be directed to the preparation of a"history of the Valley."This was achieved with the publication of"The Road to Mangamahu"in 1988 and the finished product was a triumph of effort and expertise, particularly as it covered a long, narrow, isolated and sparsely settled north-to south, hinterland area lying north-east from Wanganui and north west from Palmerstron North. The Whangaehu River has its source on the slopes of Mount Ruapehu as is remembered for the Christmas 1953 Tangawai rail disaster on its headwaters The river discharges into the Tasman Sea east of Wanganui. However, the river valley provided the basis for the settlements and the pioneering folk who established their homes and communities there. The story of"The Road."goes back to the days of pre-European Maori occupation, the arrival of the first settlers in the 1870s and'80s. For them times and circumstances were never easy but gradually farms and businesses, civic and community facilities, were established. Each and every stage of this process is fully covered in this all-embracing record of the district and its extended biographical section covers in detail the families that made up the pioneer groups and those who followed. As far as local histories go this one must be awarded top marks. Firset edition on 1988, 336 pages including index of families and properties, illustrated throughout with b/w photos, map end-papers. Green hard covers with gilt spine titles are NF with light bump to top front corner, internally NF, no inscriptions, Colour pictorial DJ is VG+ with light creasing, few chips to top edge.
