Conway's extended series of encyclopeadic reference works relating to world warship fleets, covering specific periods of naval vessel development, have become the standard reference for naval historians and enthusiasts This volume, first published in 1979, covers a particularly important period in warship technical delelopment, embracing the transition when sail gave way to steam, turreted ships replaced those with cannon broadsides and iron and steel put paid to wooden ships. It was also a time when rapid advances in weaponary and propulsion systems were taking place as was the improved resistance of armour plating on the larger vessels. Although the cut-off point of 1905 is applied to this volume, it takes the construction of capital ships up to the eve of the Dreadought era and many the ships noted participated in WWI. This issue cover the navies of eight"Great Powers", 12 coast defence navies and 23 minor navies. In addition to a three man editorial team, eight expert naval writers contributed to the book while John Roberts produced the line drawings. Each national section begins with a brief summary of historical facts and the political and economic influences relevant to each country, then moving to tachnical details for each ship or copy is identical to the original Conway printing (1979) and was produced in the UK for Mayflower Books of New York that year, 440 pages including index of ship names. illustrated with more that 400 b/w photos and 500 constant scale ship profile line drawings.
