"The Albertlanders"is sub-titled"Brave Pioneers of the'Sixties"and this facsimilie reprint of the 1927 original came at a time when copies of that edition had become"very rare."Now the reprint itself has become scarce. The Albertlanders were drawn from members of Britain's non-conformist Christian community with the first group leaving in 1862 under the auspices of the Albertland Special Settlement Scheme. The first two ships carrying almost 700 settlers arrived in late 1862 with more Albertlanders coming on other ships up to 1865. The land allocated to the settlers was situated north from Auckland extending from the Matakana/Wellsford districts north to Maungaturoto and Paparoa and to the eastern shores of the Kaipara Harbour. Co-author Henry Brett came to NZ with the first Albertlanders and Henry Hook was the son of one on of the original settlers. Part one of the book deals with the preparations for the settlement, obtaining the NZ land and the voyages out, part two relates to the initial settling of land near the Oruawharo River and the fledgling Port Albert, part three deals with the settlement of other areas notably Paparoa, Matakohe and Maungaturoto. This account graphically conveys pioneering at its most raw stages. The Albertlanders faced incredible difficulties, obstacles and hardships, often with little but their faith to see them through. Undoubtedly one of the classics of early settlement in NZ --- Capper Press served NZ historical literature well with this, and other, reprints. The reprint includes an extensive index compiled as an addition to the facsimilie edition. First edition thus of 1979, 436 pages plus 14 page unpaginated index, liberally illustrated throughout in b/w with contemporary art, photographs, many portraits. few document reproductions, plans/maps. Red hard covers with gilt spine titles are NF with hint bruising spine extremities, text block NF, no inscriptions. Colour tone/pictorial DJ is VG+ with few short tears, chips. Size: 22cm By 14.5cm
