Books

Sub-titled"A Saga of the Otago Goldfields"this book is an impressive history of the gold rush of the 1860s in which some miners found incredible riches, others nothing by heartbreak, tragedy and hardship in an area of NZ which experiences harsh conditions in the depths of winter and the peak of summer. While the earliest miners used primative methods to find nuggests in and near the rivers, their later counterparts employed sluicing, mechanical dredges and underground quartz extraction. As well as technical details of Otago gold-seeking, the book covers all the other aspects of the Otago gold rush. An import compilation of historical material. First published 1957, with second and third editions 1958 and'59 with this fouth in 1969. 204 pages including references and index, 17 b/w photos centrally located, double page map at front. Colour art card covers VG with hint edgewear at front and small bump at left near spine, internally excellent, no inscriptions.
