The Sixareen and Her Racing Descendants (Charles Sandison), Tauranga in Tauranga, Bay of Plenty for sale

Books

For many generations the Sixareen was the major fishing craft used by the fishermen of the Shetland Islands. It evolved from boats previously used, mainly built In Norway, which had owned the island group prior to 1496 when they were ceded to Scotland as part of the dowry of a princess who married the Scottish king. The Sixareen was a small double ended open boat used in large numbers by the Haaf Shetland fishermen, it was propelled by a square sail given the appropriate winds or by six oars pulled by the three crew members The author describes how, with the advent of steam fishing boats, traditional fishing practices rapidly declined, as did the numbers of Sixareen boats. He explains how the Shetland models led to the developmen of a racing version, initially using the basic hull form, but with a triangular sails rigged fore and aft. By the late 1930s the racing Sixareen had evolved to become a fully decked two masted yacht with fore and atf sails, a raised deckhouse complete with portholes but with tiller steering retained --- a photo one such yacht, the"Viking Road", is printed in the book. Original copies of Charles Sandison's"Sixareen."are rare and that name probably little recognised in modern yachting circles, but the author's publication at least ensures the name and its origins are not forgotten. First edition of 1954 published by the Shetalnd News, 53 pages, illustrated with seven b/w photos, five plans and diagrams.Front panel of the card covers, which carries drawing of a Sixareen running through broken water with the sail down, has a scattering of small foxing spots with tear at top corner and tiny section missing, few other short tears, back cover has few chips to edges and a few foxing spots, stamp with former owner details top corner title page, otherwise internally VG+ with few early page corner tips having been turned.
