William Day: The Horse. How To Breed and Rear Him, Tauranga in Tauranga, Bay of Plenty for sale

Books

According to the preface to the first edition of this book it was published in 1888, with this second and apparantly unchanged edition printed two years later."The Horse"followed ther author's two earlier books on the topic --"The Race-Horse in Training"and"Reminiscences of the Turf."While these two focused on horse racing"The Horse"was much more wide-ranging, as indicated by the sub-title"How to Breed and Rear Him"and being much more veterinary in its approad to the breeding, rearing and careing aspects. Virtually all equine types are covered -- his list made up of the race-horse, hunters, hacks, troop-horses, draught and shire horses, carriage horses and ponies. The author's reasons for the book include considerations such as improving the breed of British horses, based on his own experiences and practical knowledge, with the objective being to set fourth in detail the method and order of work covered. Day's book runs to 30 chapters, with random headings indicating the scope of content -- examples being the value of the Arab strain, origins of breeds, climate and other influences, the half-bred on the farm, the stud farm its the land and buildings, some errors and fallacies. The author has compiled a comprehensive study of the horse when, more than a century ago, that animal remained predominant in much of the transport and travel of those times, thus being a vital community and commercial asset worthy of care and careful selection for improving the quality of the horse. Second edition of 1890 from Richard Bentley and Son, 453 pages including two appendices and index. Green had covers are VG+ with few handling marks, lightly bumped lower front corner, light bruising to spine extremities, bright gilt horse decoration front cover and gilt spine titles, impressed border rules both covers, VG+ black e/papers with small label"Doxey Importer, San Francisco"lower left rear pastedown, no inscriptions.
