Music instruments

Research on this history of the Anchor Shipping and Foundry Company of Nelson was begun by Sydney Cannington after his retirement as company managing director in 1954. When he died 10 years later he had gathered much material about the company and this was used when Allan Kirk, a well known maritime historian, took over the project. Formed in 1862 Anchor was the oldest shipping company in NZ at the time of publication. At the peak of its powers the company was best known for its regular ferry service between Nelson and Wellington, but this ended in 1953. Through its history Anchor ships operated coastal services to many of NZ ports, but like the ferry operations these were gradually reduced as other forms of transport, mainly road, rail and inter-island rail ferries, were introduced and the remaining services also eventually succumbed for economic reasons and changes to shipping technologies. Anchor Shipping will be rembered for the vital part it played in the maintenance of the nation's transportation systems for more than a century. The combined efforts of Kirk and Conningham provides a valuable record of that contribution.
