Jeff Newport, was a respected and active historian of the Nelson Province and"Collingwood"was his third book. It traces the history of that district, north-east of Nelson in Golden Bay, from the first Maori residents. the arrival of the early European settlers in the 1840s up to 1912. Collingwood came into prominance in 1857 when the discovery of gold in the area created NZ's first gold rush. The iniatial rush of prospectors sought alluvial gold, later moving to alternatives of crushing, dredging and sluicing. This precious metal was not the only natural resource and other activities included sawmilling, flax processing, coal mining and the development of agriculture. Newport's book covers all these, and other, facets of development, plus the advent of local body administration, community amenities and the provision of the shippping services vital to the isolated settlements in the Collingwood district. Few books so well recall the difficulties, hardships, isolation or the pioneers, and their persistance and determination to overcome these obstacles. Jeff Willlson was brought up in the Nelson back country and was eminently qualified to research and compile this first-class history of early Collingwood and adjacent districts.
