1st Thus. 24.5cm By 16cm. After Stanley located Livingstone in"darkest Africa"in 1871 he remained in the Congo to carry out additional exploration and engineering assignments. During these he experienced a near-fatal illness and these previously unpublished letters and general summaries of his experiences reveal how immensely versatile and resilient Stanley was, while also providing great detail about life in Africa in the latter 1800s. Many of the letters are to officers of the Belgian administration, others to King Leopold II of Belgium. Originally published in French, this first English edition. 183 pages, four chapters followed by chronology, principal works consulted, list of letters, two b/w frontis King Leopod and Stanley, 12 plates, portraits, scenes, letter facsimiles, two maps. Deep red hard covers VG+ with light bruising spine extremities, gilt spine titles, actual title on green panel, dealer label lower right on pastedown, two small tape marks adjacent hinge, these are repeated on back pastedown, textblock otherwise NF. Price clipped art DJ small section missing spine top and bottom, V section missing top back adjacent spine, tape repaired tears top front at flap fold, tape repair to tears/crease back top, few other nicks, chips, small tears.
