Although available in reprints, original editions of this important book on fruit grown in southern India are scarce, particularly with the original dust jacket. The contents are presented in two parts, with 10 chapters.in the first and eight in the second. The author was fruit specialist to the Government of Madras and in part one covers general topics including the importance of the fruit industry to the region, nursery practice, planning, layout and planting, orchard culture and cropping, part two deals more with fruit types and varieties and localities best suited to them. The guide contains the wisdom and the advice of the author, based on his long experience of horticultural production in India and the theory and practicalities involved. First edition of 1949, 477 pages, including index, illustrations include colour frontis and 10 colour plates, more than 100 b/w photos, diagrams and sketches plus tables. Green hard covers with gilt spine titles are VG+. dealer label lower right front pastedown, small name top corner FFEP, small blemish page 169 (probably paper manufacturing fault) confined to the vertical margin with minimal intrusion to text, internally otherwise excellent. Colour pictorial DJ is VG with small section missing spine top, light creasing at top edge. few chips. A better first edition copy would be hard to find.
