The opossum was introducted to NZ from Australia in the mid-1800s and rapidly established colonies, which soon increased to"pest"proportions. However, it was not until after WWII that positive and official policies were introduced to contol possum numbers. This booklet was issued by ther NZ Forest Service to assist these measures and also examine commercial oppotunities arising, in the main, from possum pelts.The booklet describes the animals and their habits, control options, including trapping/poisioning methods, with technical advice on skinning and drying pelts and grading the quality of the fur. Detail of all aspects of possum control, and skin preperation is covered in text and photographs, with a sequence of 17 of the latter illustrating the skinning process. Photos include the vegetation favoured by the animals, trap setting and skin drying procedures, there is a plan for a trappers'camp with skinning factilties and another for a box trap, There are several other related sketches/drawings. Much of the detail in the booklet was first published in the NZ Journal of Agriculture in 1949 and reprinted by the Wildlife Branch, Department of Internal Affairs, later that year. Reprinted in this booklet form by the NZ Forest Service in 1963, revised and reprinted in 1969 with this reprint in 1976. 52 pages including a concluding table of possum browse preferences for trees, small trees, shrubs and creepers etc. Card covers with photo to front VG+, small ink name/date top corner contents page, otherwise internally excellent with b/w illustrations throughout.
