O S Nock was a noted and prolific railway historian whose writings concentrated of the development of rail as a transport system in the British Isles and when this volume was printed it added to the list of about two dozen publications he had compiled."British Steam Railways"was to be somewhat different to most of its predecessors in that it covered the entire evolution of the British rail system rather than a specific topic. Thus the book covers the development of the steam locomotive from the 1820s up to the 1960s when the golden age of steam rail was giving way to more modern forms of motive power and the famous railway companies had disappeared in the railway nationalisation of 1948. Nock's overall study of the steam era is wide-ranging covering, all aspects of rail operations such as engineering factors in the permanent way including bridges and tunnels, signalling, railway yards, passenger coaches, railway activity through two World Wars, mail and cargo traffic, express, main-line, surburban trains and services on"lesser lines."Different rail guages and speed achievements of steam locomotives are also considered, This book could be said to be a collective of all the railway lore, facts and wisdom absorbed by this paramount author on British railway history over many years. His erudite text is complemented by a feast of illustrations.
