The Menzies were pioneers of the Banks Peninsula, Canterbury, arriving there in 1878 as settlers in the bay that bears their name. John Henry Menzies had come to NZ from Scotland, originally living in Southland from 1860 and took up property on the peninsula with his wife and young family. His grandson was the author of this book who says"By way of an Introduction"that his grandfather had written a family history 40 years earlier and expressed the hope then that one of his children would continue the story. A generation later Ian Menzies took up that task and he describes the resultant tale as one of"people and property"in which the seclusion and isolation of the latter had a tremendous influence on those living there. There was no"community life apart from the family."There was"the infrequent visit of a coastal ship trading around the bays."It was not until 1928 that Menzies Bay had road access --- Grandfather had resisted this when first proposed believing it would"spoil the privacy of the place, so for 50 years travel to the outside world was by sea or on horseback". Isolated maybe, but the author says the family seemed to have a tendency to"roost on the same perch. It is a comfortable perch I know, as I chose it mayself."He takes the story of the family's life on the Bay up to 1964. The original land holding taken up by John Henry Menzies was about 3000 acres"in one compact block."The combination of his earlier writings and those of grandson Ian give a vivid picture of both the earlier and the latter days, to present a graphic record of pioneering in relative isolation that continued over three generations.First edition by Pegasus of 1970, 222 pages, illustrated with a colour reproduction of a 1889 painting by J Gibb showing the Bay as it would have appeared when visited by Captain Cook, with a reproduction of the original bill of sale for the land on the reverse, 30 b/w illustrations --- photos, three drawings and several portraits. e/paper maps.
