First published in 1944, with a second edition in 1947 and this third, edition, revised by O L Owen, in 1950 This is a rugby book that loloks at the game from its origins in the English Public School; system. The emphasis is on the game and its players from the British Isles, but it also refers to the international scene with a chapter devoted to"The Secret of New Zealand's Rugby Success"and to"South Africa's Success--- and a Failure.". In the years since the book first appeared the game,has changed greatly at all levels, It is no longer the sport of amateurs, the rules have undergone great modification, the code has spread to many countries, though a relative few still dominate, the organisational structure has developed injto a corporate giant and the Rugby World Cup is now a major intenational sporting spectacle. The student of today's game will learn much about how it was played in those bygone days. An indication of the wide ranging scope of this study can be gained from a few of the 21 chaper headings ---Three-Quarter Back Play; Kickers and Kicking; Our Arbiters (referees) and The Half-Backs -- A Revolutionary Proposal.
