Music instruments

When Richardson and Co, the coastal shipping company based at Napier and serving numerous small ports and harbours on the east coast of the North Island of NZ celebrated in centenary in 1959 it was the oldest shipping company in the country. Its second ship, the Fairy, was its first steamer of 45 gross tons. In the early days a number of small sailing vessels were employed but the fleet rapidly became dominated by steamers, later by motor vessels. With road and rail only slowly extending over the rugged East Coast Richardson's little ships remained the vital transport system for many years after the 100 years celebrations. The author, a prominant nautical writer, produced a fine history of a remarkable company where no bay or inlet or cargo was too small or difficult to service if the trade demanded. 108 pages including appendix, fleet list and index, 30 b/w photos, e/paper maps, head and tail sketches most chapters, decorative colour title page. Blue/grey hard covers with gilt spine titles VG+, Collector of Customs office stamp top left FFEP verso, compliments slip pasted in lower half-title, text block otherwise excellent, no other inscriptions. Wrap-round art DJ is VG with short tear front top edge.
