Author John Dunmore, has long been recognised as an eminant historian, specialising in the early exploration of the Pacific Ocean, particularly that of the French navigators, with his works winning high recognation in France and elsewhere. The subject of"Storms and Dreams"in this biography is Louis De Bougainville (1728-1811) whose most notable voyaging was his global cicumnavigation extenging from 1766 to 1769, and in the process exploring many Pacific island groups. In addition to his contributions to navigation and exploration, Compte De Bougainville was also influential in a number of other international and European affairs, including service with the French army and navy, the war between Britain and France over Canada, establishing French colonies, support for an independent American nation, involvement in the Napoleonic wars, the French Revolution and the return of Napoleon. Bougainville was also active in politics, in the sciences and promoted advances that encouraged growth, development and artistic achievement in France. Professor John Dumore's biography of Bougainville is expansive and shows him to have been a man of many talents and remarkable skills, whose contribution to world affairs has largely been under-rated in English language biographical history. First edition from Exisle of 2005, 296 pages including appendix, notes, bibliography and index, eight page centrally located b/w illustrations section has two Bougainville portraits, art views of Quebec and French settlement in the Falkland Islands, three illustrations from his circumnavigation expedition, title page reproduction of his book recording that venture and photographs showing the Bougainville Memorial at Tahiti and fortifications at the Port of Brest.
