Carring the sub-title"The Romantic Story of Waipu and Her Sister Settlements"the content of this NZ pioneering history is best described by a quote from the forward:"'The Gael;Fares Forth'is a saga of adventurous Scottish Highlanders and their journeyings over the Atlantic, the Indian Ocean, and the Pacific and their achievements in Nova Scotia and New Zealand", adding that it is an"epic of emigration.a chronical of endurance, determination, courage in the face of great difficulties and disappointments and, above all , of unswerving loyalty to therir leader and fervent faith in God."Norman McLeod was to lead these dispossed Highlanders first to Nova Scotia (about 1817), then to Cape Breton Island, then after about 30 years and much hardship, struggle and some successes, they moved again. This time attracted to South Australia where their journeying did not end. Apart from a few who chose to reamin there, the bulk of the community decided, in 1853, to move to NZ and by the early 1860s about 1000 Gaelic speaking settlers, mainly arriving from Nova Scotia, had established a virtually self-contained Scottish community at Waipu (north from Auckland). For these people the hardships and uncertainties of pioneering were well-known and although there were difficulties to overcome a flourishing community was soon established and though many changes have since taken place its Scottish heritage and traditions are still important and a reminder of the origins of the Waipu settlement and district. The foreward to the second edition was contibuted by the then NZ Prime Minister, Peter Fraser, who is described elsewhere in the book as"one of the most distinguished Gaels in the history of this country."In his preface the author said the second edition was more than a"mere reprint"with much new new material added and original content re-arranged with corrections to"points of detail"while appendices were"greatly erxtended"and new photographs included."The Gael Fares Forth"was first published in 1935 with the second edition in 1942, 320 pages including five appendices, bibliography and index, b/w illustrations include two contemporary art works, map of Waipu parish and district, nine portraits of original settlers plus 18 b/w photos.
