Sub-titled"A History of Marine Engineering in Australia"this fine publication in fact studies, in depth and in a readable style, the development of shipping from the first steamers in Australiasian waters up to the arrival of the container-ship, advanced electronics and propulsion machinery. The publication was sponsored by the Sydney Branch of the Institute of Marine Engineers with Mike Richards telling the story in an interesting, informative and comprehensive way. Covered are the advances in shipbuilding and design from the 1830s when the first small steamers were introduced, plus marine industries. His covereage traverses the evolution of differing propulsion systems and a vistual highlight of Mike's book is the excellent illustrations covering the various developments in shipping. The 16 chapters conclude with four of a general nature: Personalities and Anecdotes, Breakdowns and Unusual Repairs, Automatic Control Engineering and Unusual Ships. The foreword describes the motivation for the book as"not just nostalgic"but more an acceptance of the debt owned to earlier generations of ingenious and inventive engineers who"without the benefit of the formal education available today produced the'Workhorses'for the transport of people and cargoes to, from and around Australia and New Zealand."First edition of 1987, 269 pages including three appendices and index, illlustrated throughout with more than 100 b/w photos, art, diagrams, technical drawings, including ship sections and marine machinery, ship plans and deck equipment. VG+ card covers have colour photo at front overlaying a wrap-rounf engineering drawing, internally excellent, no inscriptions. 23.5cm By 17.5
